BOMA GTB News: May 2017 Print

President's Message

A big shout out to BOMA Georgia, who hosted the Southern Region Conference from April 6-9th in Atlanta and did a fabulous job of bringing us a variety of education to help us build our local associations and further our industry knowledge.  Highlights of the conference included:

  •          A Panel Discussion on Medical Office and Industrial property management, the fastest-growing sectors in our industry

  •          An excellent presentation analyzing leadership and communication across generational divides

  •          A TOBY Awards Gala replete with a quintet from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

  •          A Trade Show featuring southeastern Allied Members educating us on their products and services

If you missed it, mark your calendar now to attend the BOMA International Conference in Nashville from June 24-27th for unsurpassed education, product sourcing and networking.

Thank you to the Sustainability Committee for organizing a Beach Clean-up on Earth Day.  We all remarked that Picnic Island was much cleaner than during last year’s event, so kudos to everyone for their effort and the public awareness that such events impact!

This week is your last chance to sign up for our annual Golf Tournament at East Lake Woodlands Country Club on May 22nd.  A few sponsorships are still available, as well. It promises to be a great day of fun and networking!

You won’t want to miss our May membership meeting when we’ll be touring the City of Tampa Emergency Operations Center (not to be confused with the Hillsborough County EOC!) on Wednesday, May 24th.  Look forward to seeing you there.

As Sr. Thomas Watson said, “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart.”  We greatly appreciate all of our members who put their heart and soul into BOMA Greater Tampa Bay!

Government Affairs Update

The BOMA GTB Government Affairs Committee works closely with BOMA Florida to track bills and pending legislation that affect commercial real estate.  Occasionally BOMA Florida will identify a specific bill or piece of legislation that it strongly supports or strongly objects to, and it issues a “Call to Action” to the local associations to contact their legislators to urge them to vote for or against a particular item.  Last month, BOMA Florida had two such Calls to Action: one relating to building codes and one relating to sales tax on commercial rent.  We asked our local members to click on the link in the email, which allowed members to plug in their zip code and be linked directly to their legislators with a message asking them to support or vote against the issues.  It took all of about 30 seconds to complete, and we are pleased to say that your efforts are working!  We have received word from BOMA Florida that these emails and communications are having their intended effect on the Florida Legislature.  BOMA Florida and our local GA Committee will be providing updates on these items soon, so look for that in the near future.  In the meantime, whenever you receive a “Call to Action” from us, please take a moment and lend your support to the cause.  Your voice matters, and when we combine our collective voices, things really happen!
