BOMA GTB News: January 2018 Print

President's Message

Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe it is 2018 already? Seriously, weren’t the 90s just a few years ago?? As I sit here, freezing, and writing my very first President’s Message, I am reflecting on the past years and the growth I’ve seen in BOMA Greater Tampa Bay. I have been a member of this organization for 12 years now and I am so proud to begin my tenure serving as your President. Our organization would be nothing without our members and our committees going above and beyond to make us great. So, as you are contemplating how you will serve in 2018, please consider joining one of our many committees. Please visit the website, http://bomagtb.org/Committees, to review each committees purpose and at our January luncheon on January 24th, each chair will be introduced and will be excited to give you all the information you need.

As you are aware, advocacy is a major proponent of BOMA and this year we have two opportunities to get in front of our leadership and speak about Commercial Real Estate and how legislation affects it. At the end of the month, several of the Association’s leadership will be headed to Washington D.C. and conducting congressional visits during the Winter Business Meeting and National Issues Conference.

Also, Tuesday, February 13th, Greater Tampa Bay will be joining other BOMA local associations throughout the state of Florida for Advocacy Day in Tallahassee. Through lobbying with our state congressional leadership, we have successfully obtained a decrease in the sales tax on real estate leases, decreasing from 6% to 5.8%. Though it may not seem like a lot, it is a step in the right direction! Our Government Affairs committee will be coordinating our Tally Day trip and a training session will be set up to ensure we are all ready to lobby. Please consider joining us at one or both events, the more people, the greater the impact!

Thank you to all who have renewed your membership for 2018. Remember, to remain an active member, your membership dues must be received by February 28th. Renewing is easy! Please go to the Log In section of our website (bomagtb.org) and sign in. Should you have any questions or problems, please contact Melanie Schrul at melanie@bomagtb.org

Please join me in making 2018 a tremendous year!

Sara Wayson, CPM®, RPA®, CSM® - BOMA GTB President

Government Affairs Update

The department of revenue released their announcement of the sales tax reduction on leases from 6% to 5.8%.  Please click here for the official notification from the Florida Department of Revenue verifying that this reduction includes all leases wherein the commercial tenant occupies space as of January 1st, 2018.  Also, note that this is regardless of when payment is paid.  For example, if January 2018 rental payments are paid in December 2017, the reduction still applies.  We hope this clears up some miscommunications from the media in the past.

We recommend that you forward this to your owners as well as your accounting departments.

Thank you!

Chris Rotolo, President - BOMA Florida
