BOMA GTB News: March 2017 Print

President's Message

February was a busy month for BOMA Greater Tampa Bay. The popular TOBY Committee kicked off planning for this year’s reenergized November event and will commence with regular monthly meetings beginning in March. Look for the announcement and plan how you can help the committee with this great event.

On February 21st BOMA GTB joined BOMA members from around the state in Tallahassee to lobby our congressional leaders to support commercial real estate industry causes. Our most pressing issue is repealing the sales tax on commercial leases and we have the support of the Governor again this year, as well as corresponding bills in both the House and Senate. We’ll keep you apprised of the progress.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn rallied our membership on February 22nd at our monthly membership luncheon outlining an eye-popping array of projects underway or in the late planning stages in our great city. The transformation of downtown Tampa into a vibrant live-work-play environment in the past decade is truly a marvel. I live in St. Pete and came to Tampa three times this past Saturday, which is a testament to Mayor Bob’s summation that the Tampa Bay Area bridges are no longer barriers between the great cities of our metro area.

As we look ahead to March, mark your calendars for Thursday, March 9, 2017 when we welcome Laura Ragans, BOMA Int’l Nominating Committee Vice Chair, for Leadership Training, as follows:

• 1pm – 2pm BOMA GTB Board of Directors and Committee Chairs Only
• 2pm – 3pm BOMA GTB Committee Members and Subcommittee Chairs / Members

Board Members are encouraged to attend for the full two hours, if possible. Thank you to Lynn Vilmar and team, who will host our training at the Bank of America Building, 101 East Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, 8th FL Conference Room.

Last, but certainly not least, our premier Allied networking event, the Property Manager’s Showcase, is Wednesday, March 22nd beginning at 4pm with a Cocktail Party open to everyone. From there, 30 lucky Allied Members will have one-on-one “speed dates” with local property management teams. Property Managers, we need YOU to sign your teams up today, please: http://bomagtb.org/meetinginfo.php?id=247&ts=1487177802. We have an amazing group of Allied Members who are eager to help us make our properties be the best they can be!

As you hone your goals for what you would like to accomplish in the coming weeks, remember the words of Michelangelo: “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” The sky is the limit for BOMA Greater Tampa Bay.

Tally Day 2017

BOMA Greater Tampa Bay sent five members to represent us in Tallahassee on February 21st, joining two dozen BOMA members from around the state, to lobby our region’s congressional leaders in support of CRE issues, namely:

  1. Repealing the sales tax on commercial leases that puts our state at a competitive disadvantage to other states and also negatively impacts our businesses, small and large, unfairly burdened with this added tax.  No other state in the union taxes commercial leases.
  2. Regarding Building Codes, our position is that Florida should adopt the International Code Council codes used by the other 49 states in the union and not an updated version of the Florida Building Code.
  3. Regarding Energy Benchmarking, BOMA International strongly encourages VOLUNTARY benchmarking by our members, but does not believe that governments should make this mandatory and unfairly impact buildings with natural impediments to scoring well (e.g., large critical systems presence, manufacturing facilities, etc.) .

Our contingent had the pleasure of meeting with seven Senators, Representatives and/or their staffs and had an overwhelmingly positive welcome by all.  Thank you to Brian Davis, Chris Ennest, Dawn Forrest and Sheryl Frick who joined President Sandy Ballestra for the trip to Tally Day.
