BOMA GTB News: August 2017 Print

President's Message

We are all deeply saddened by the news that Mike Biddle, BOMA GTB 2007-08 Past President, recipient of the Lifetime Honorary Member of BOMA Greater Tampa Bay Award and most of all FRIEND to all he knew, passed away on July 26th. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.

All prospective and current students in the BOMI education program are invited to attend the Education Committee’s 'Reach New Heights' Luncheon on Friday, August 11th from 11:30-1pm at Tampa City Center’s Building Conference Room, 201 North Franklin Street, Suite 2870, Tampa, FL 33602. Sign up today: http://bomagtb.org/meetinginfo.php?id=352&ts=1500302478.

Please join us for the Yuengling Brewery Tour on Wednesday, August 23rd from 4:30-6:30pm. After a tour of the facility, we’ll enjoy hors d’oeuvres, beer tastings and a silent auction. All proceeds benefit BOMAPAC, which is BOMA International’s political action committee. It enables BOMA International’s advocacy team to raise money to re-elect political candidates for federal office who know, understand and support policies that affect commercial real estate.

Excitement is building for the The Outstanding Building of the Year (aka TOBY) Awards Banquet on November 2nd at the Florida Aquarium. We are accepting entries now for buildings of all types to compete for the prestigious award at the local level and to go on to represent Greater Tampa Bay at the Southern Region TOBY Awards next Spring. We need robust competition to challenge the old guard (yes, that’s me!), so please sign up to enter yours today: http://bomagtb.org/TOBY_Awards.

Many of us are knee-deep in budget season and as you prepare your annual budgets, don’t forget the wealth of comparable expense information contained in the Experience Exchange Report for our market. Download the market data to prove to your owners that your buildings are performing well within their competitive set here: https://eer.boma.org/Boma/.

While on the topic of annual budgets, remember to budget for yours and your staff’s education that BOMA Greater Tampa Bay and BOMI are here to facilitate for you. As Mahatma Gandhi aptly observed: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Here’s to a lifetime of learning for all of us.

Save the Date for the TOBY Awards!

SAVE THE DATE! The 2017-2018 TOBY Awards will be held on November 2, 2017 at 6pm at the Mosaic Center, a spectacular new addition to The Florida Aquarium boasting beautiful views of Harbor Island and the Channelside District.  We encourage all Property Managers to enter a building, or two, and take advantage of this great opportunity to garner recognition for all the hard work you and your staff put into keeping your buildings in top condition. This year’s event introduces two new categories providing more opportunities to showcase your properties, and more chances to bring back the trophy! Please visit the BOMA GTB website and click on the TOBY tab under EVENTS for all of the details as well as sponsorship opportunities. If you are unsure about entering your property or have questions, please contact Carol Dunn,  carol.dunn@highwoods.com or Leigh Kendall, lkendall@pinellascounty.org. We would be happy to walk you through the process! Click here to learn more about the building entrance process.

The BOMA W2 Water and Waste Challenge

The W2 Water and Waste Challenge is a two-year initiative to encourage commercial real estate practitioners to benchmark water and waste consumption and associated costs, and to implement common practices to improve water performance and reduce waste. With the support of a generous grant from Yardi, and in partnership with the BOMA Local Associations, BOMA International is proud to launch this Challenge that highlights and expands the sustainability efforts of the commercial real estate industry. The program will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019, and participants will be eligible for recognition for their leadership from BOMA International.  Year 1 will establish a baseline and Year 2 will promote performance improvements.

  • Reduce operating costs
  • Earn recognition for being an industry leader in benchmarking and performance improvements
