President's Message

Let’s start off with a big shout-out to the Programs Committee for putting together a fun BOMA PAC event at the Yuengling Brewery last month that raised $3.5K to support commercial real estate interests at all levels of government.  A special THANK YOU to all of our standing committees tasked with putting together Silent Auction baskets – that alone raised $1.4K for the cause.  What a pleasure it is to lead this Association of such engaged and enthusiastic professionals!

BOMA Greater Tampa Bay will be accepting nominations for the Board of Directors for the 2-year 2018–2019 term in early September.  Our active, all-volunteer membership base is critical to our success and I’m sure that we’ll have another stellar group of candidates.  Look for the e-mail with additional information shortly. 

For a 2-day crash course in advocacy and leadership training, you won’t want to miss the BOMA Florida Conference on October 5-6th in Jupiter.  We have a strong contingent of leaders and active members from BOMA GTB attending and we’d love to see you there.

All organizations must adapt to change and we have a big one on the horizon.  Our long-time association management team, GMS Group, is winding down their business to focus on family and will be handing off the reigns to our new association manager in October.  BAE (BOMA Association Executive) Cecily Millan and her wonderful staff have served our members for over thirty years and we will miss them dearly.  THANK YOU Cecily, Krystal, Andrew, Debra, Courtney and Maria for keeping all of us volunteers organized and on point during your tenure.  We’ll introduce you to our new BAE, Melanie Schrul and her local team member, Elaine Kennedy, in our October newsletter.  All contact e-mails and phone numbers for our organization remain the same.

Valpak, North America's leading direct marketer has built one of the most advanced and automated manufacturing centers in the world. The new state-of-the-art manufacturing center located in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a hub of technology where automation and robotics is at the core of the operation.

Important things you should know:
Visitors must park in the general parking lot (though those with a physical disability may park up front, with the proper placard).

Smoking: All entrances and walkways to the facilities are smoke free. There is a designated smoking area with a receptacle located near the flagpole.
Badge: Authorized visitors must wear badge/name tag at all times while on company premises.

Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

BOMA International extends its thoughts and prayers to the people impacted by Hurricane Harvey.  Houston BOMA has established a GoFundMe account to help Houston BOMA members who have lost their homes and belongings in the flood.  The proceeds received will go directly to Houston BOMA members to assist in putting their lives back together.  Houston BOMA has donated the first $10,000 to the account.  To donate, please go to

BOMA International is in contact with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to gather any information that may be helpful to our members.  Ken Rosenfeld, Director of State and Local Affairs, has been participating in daily Critical Infrastructure Stakeholder conference calls with DHS.  Of particular note, it is anticipated that “reentry” will become a serious obstacle—it will be difficult to determine the protocols to check on buildings once the storm is over.  Since Texas is a “home rule” state, all authority resides with the local jurisdictions, meaning that there may be unique protocols for each jurisdiction. DHS is preparing a list of the local contacts and protocols.  BOMA International will post this information to its website once it becomes available. 

BOMA International also is assisting the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with their relief efforts.  ALAN is seeking donated warehouse space, with priority requests for 10,000 square feet in San Antonio and Austin to support shelters, and another 50,000 to 100,000 in Houston for the Red Cross.  FEMA is seeking housing in the Houston area for incoming staff and responders.  They are looking for accessible buildings of at least 10,000 square feet, with room to park vehicles, in Houston, Wharton, Brazoria County and Nueces County.  The buildings can be “bare-bones,” as FEMA will provide cots, blankets, sanitary facilities and whatever else is needed.  Also, the FEMA logistics team is looking for a large, accessible warehouse space of approximately 100,000 square feet in any of the above locations.  We have contacted the BOMA local associations in Texas to spread the word to their members about both these requests.

In a related matter, this natural disaster underscores the importance of advocating for a responsible and robust National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Earlier this year, BOMA International created the following policy position:

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International urges the federal government to implement policies that ensure that all commercial property owners have the ability to obtain flood insurance for their properties at reasonable and affordable rates. BOMA supports efforts from Congress to ensure the long term viability of the National Flood Insurance Program. BOMA also supports initiatives that expand the private insurance market and improve the accuracy of flood mapping.

BOMA’s advocacy team is working with members of Congress to ensure that this important program is reauthorized, especially in light of the damage from Hurricane Harvey.

The BOMA W2 Water and Waste Challenge


The W2 Water and Waste Challenge is a two-year initiative to encourage commercial real estate practitioners to benchmark water and waste consumption and associated costs, and to implement common practices to improve water performance and reduce waste. With the support of a generous grant from Yardi, and in partnership with the BOMA Local Associations, BOMA International is proud to launch this Challenge that highlights and expands the sustainability efforts of the commercial real estate industry. The program will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019, and participants will be eligible for recognition for their leadership from BOMA International.  Year 1 will establish a baseline and Year 2 will promote performance improvements.



Why Participate?

Participation in W2 will allow you to:

  • Better understand and track how your building consumes water and manages waste
  • Compare your performance to your peers
  • Identify opportunities for improvement
  • Receive training and guidance on how to improve water and waste management practices
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Earn recognition for being an industry leader in benchmarking and performance improvements


Who Can Participate?

Any commercial real estate practitioner can participate who:

  • Owns and/or operates one or more buildings
  • Benchmarks consumption and cost data for water usage and waste tracking in ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®
  • Shares buildings with BOMA International via ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager


How Do I Participate?

  • Sign up before January 1, 2018.
  • Share your buildings with the BOMA ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®account.
  • Enter water and waste consumption and cost data into Portfolio Manager at least quarterly.

Become a part of the W2 Challenge and JOIN TODAY!

What Recognition Can I Earn?

  • All participants will be recognized for accepting the Challenge at the BOMA International Winter Business Meeting in January 2018.
  • Buildings and portfolios that show any improvement in water and/or waste performance will receive recognition at a future BOMA International Conference & Expo.
  • Selected success stories will be featured in BOMA publications.
  • Participants are encouraged to use the Challenge logo and related materials to publicize their participation.
