Welcome to Spring! March brings warmer weather, spring break plans, and of course the annual Property Manager Showcase! As you begin to fill in your calendar, please remember to add this important event on March 28th at The Rusty Pelican from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. Without our Allied members, our properties would not look the way they do! Please take the time to get to know them, allow them to understand your needs, and create new relationships. And everyone loves the speed dating!
Our education series has started with a bang! February brought our first BOMI class of the year, the riveting Budgeting & Accounting class. We are offering four additional classes this year. So, if you are making your way through the classes to gain your RPA or FMA, or maybe you are in need of continuing education classes, consider taking them locally. We have some amazing teachers on board and there is nothing better than having a long time veteran in front of you answering all of your questions. Also, don’t forget BOMA Greater Tampa Bay has six scholarships that we are awarding this year! The deadline to apply is March 30th. Don’t delay, apply today by clicking here! (yeah, I know that was cheesy, but do it!)
Don’t forget, March 15th is the last day to renew your membership; if not received, your name will be dropped from our member list. If you have already renewed, THANK YOU! If not, please get your payment in today to avoid reapplying for membership or being put on the wait list.
Have a wonderful month!

Government Affairs Update
BOMA GTB GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
On February 13, 2018, eight members of BOMA GTB travelled to Tallahassee to participate in BOMA Florida’s Day at the Capitol. Chris Brill, Joseph Clemis, Jason Discesare, Juniper Duffin, Chris Ennis, Sheryl Frick, Carla Markowitz and Ken Walling met with legislators from the Greater Tampa Bay Area to lobby for two issues that are important to commercial real estate: further reduction of sales tax on rent, and ensuring that the Florida Building Commission retains a seat for a BOMA member. Above is a photo of one lobbying group meeting with Representative Kathleen Peters of St. Petersburg.
The group also met with other BOMA local associations in the Historic Capitol Senate Museum Chamber to hear from BOMA Florida’s lobbyist, Lee Moffitt, who discussed these lobbying issues, and to present BOMA Florida’s Legislator of the Year Award to Senator Keith Perry of Gainesville. Senator Perry was chosen in part because he sponsored a bill to further reduce the sales tax on commercial rent.
Lee Moffitt has since reported that the House Ways & Means Committee’s tax package includes a reduction in the business rent tax from 5.8% to 5.5%, which would be another victory for BOMA and commercial real estate in Florida. Lee appeared at the committee meeting to lobby for BOMA on this important issue.
