BOMA GTB News: February 2017 Print

President's Message

As I write this I am on the plane home from the annual BOMA International Winter Business Meeting in San Diego with our Vice President, Sara Wayson. Past President Kent Walling rounded out our triumvirate as we soaked in the knowledge and camaraderie brought to bear by our parent organization. We joined over two hundred colleagues from around the globe to contribute to national committees, vote on new policies and procedures put forth by those committees at the BOMA Int’l Board of Governors Meeting and to learn from our Allied partners. My primary takeaways were:

  1. The Internet of Things (IOT) is here and the interconnectivity of our building systems will multiply more rapidly than we can imagine in a few short years.

  2. An updated Floor Measurement System (FMS) for Office Buildings is being released later this year that will include the SF of those outdoor work spaces that so many of us are adding to our buildings, as well as lower floor vertical penetrations that weren't previously incorporated into our RSF. Look for an Industrial FMS to be drafted soon, as well.

  3. Densification of our buildings has multiple operational impacts that need to be addressed before we sign leases doubling the population of a suite over base design.

  4. The educational partnership with BOMI is stronger than ever as we provide learning platforms for all generational preferences and building management disciplines.

  5. The strength of our Advocacy programs and impact to the CRE industry at the local, regional and national level is truly a marvel.

  6. Learning from other local associations how they best serve their members through engaging programming helps us all grow stronger together.

Thank you for the honor of being your President and for the opportunity to learn how I can serve you and our industry to the best of my abilities.

Monthly Luncheon

February 22, 2017 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Tampa Club: 101 E. Kennedy Blvd. Suite 4200 Tampa, FL 33602
Members: $40 & Non-Members: $50

We are excited to have Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn speak with us about what is in store for the Greater Tampa area in the future.

In the past three years, Mayor Buckhorn focused on the city and region’s economic leadership, stability, and most importantly, business opportunity. Today, local government is smarter, urban development is centered on the riverfront, and Tampa is recognized as the competitive city it is. Our continued success in those efforts will set the stage for how and why we build in tomorrow’s Tampa.

**Remember to bring CASH for our 50/50 drawing!**

Tally Day 2017

BOMA Florida Day at the Capitol will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.  All members of BOMA GTB are invited and encouraged to attend.  It is a great opportunity to meet your legislators, watch our government in action, and be an advocate for BOMA Florida, BOMA GTB, and the commercial real estate industry.   A block of rooms has been reserved at Candlewood Suites in Tallahassee for those planning on going up the night before, and we will also provide transportation for those who want to drive to Tallahassee as a group. You can email Carla Markowitz at or Juniper Duffin at with any questions about the event.

We are having a Government Affairs meeting on February 7th from 2:00pm - 3:00pm to discuss Tally Day, and will join in on the BOMA Florida Tally Day call.  If you are planning on attending by telephone, we will provide you with the BOMA Florida call in number as soon it is received. Please make sure to RSVP for this meeting here!

  • Each year during legislative session, commercial real estate owners and managers travel to Tallahassee to spend a day at the Capitol to discuss BOMA’s stance on issues important to our industry. Having a strong showing from our members at the Capitol sends the message that BOMA is a robust association with the backing of a talented and involved membership. The tentative agenda is as follows:

  • 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM – For those who arrive early we will have an informal meeting to discuss agenda, position papers, and key meetings at the Cafeteria on the lower level of the main Capitol Building.
  • 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM – Speaker presentations; meeting location Historic Capitol Museum’s Senate Chamber. Note: Prompt gathering at 10:00 AM is required, as we will be welcoming elected officials as speakers and presenting the Legislative Member of the Year Award.
